Hands-On
Cadaver Workshop

Saturday, November 08, 2008

Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology
(University of Heidelberg)

During the cadaver workshop the participants will have the opportunity to expose the shoulder joint properly and implant different types of shoulder prosthesis supplied by the sponsoring companies. The participants will rotate from a table solely dedicated to inverse arthroplasty to a table for anatomic and fracture implants. One instructor at every table will support the participants and help them with preparation and can answer questions during the crucial steps of shoulder arthroplasty.

Emphasis is not only put on the bone preparation but also on soft tissue exposure including nerve and tendon releases in order to restore range of motion in the real OR setting.

  1. Soft tissue
    1.1. Delto-pectoral approach
    1.2. MacKenzie approach
1.3. Preparation of brachial plexus and axillary nerve (“nerve to nerve release”)
    1.4. Subscapularis lengthening and mobilization
1.5. Capsulotomy anterior, inferior and posterior
  2. Bone
2.1. Humeral head resection (free hand, landmarks, resection guides)
    2.2. Reaming the canal
    2.3. Implantation of shaft
    2.4. Glenoid exposition and reaming
2.5. Implantation of glenoid components (cemented & cementless)
  3. Fracture arthroplasty
3.1. Mobilization of tuberosities in fractures
3.2. Determining humeral length and head height in fracture arthroplasty
3.3. Refixation of tuberosities (cerclage, vertical sutures, tuberosity to stem)
  4. 4. Inverse Prosthesis
4.1. Emphasis on different humeral head resection
    4.2. Creating the right retroversion
4.3. Glenoid exposure and fixation of gelnoid components
    4.4. Determining the right tension

We would like the participants to follow the schedule that is given according to the number of participants in order to have a smooth run of the course.

We want to express our thanks to Professor Alfred Völkl and his team from the Institute for Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Heidelberg for their collaboration!
